The Many Faces of Eve
Posted on Monday, March 1st, 2010In Celebration of Women History Month the Perth Amboy Gallery Center for the Arts Presents, THE MANY FACES OF EVE March 8th - April 30, 2010 Opening Reception: Thursday March 25th from 5:30-8:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served Artists: Jamie Allen Patricia Banks Laura L Cuevas Harriet FeBland, Gracelyn Molina, Amy Ortiz Patricia Saxto, Adrienne Wheeler Curator: Laura Cuevas The images presented in this exhibition are as diverse and as varied as the image of Eve herself. There is no one image of the first woman. Jamie Allen, Patricia Banks, Laura Cuevas, Harriet FeBland, Gracelyn Molina, Amy Ortiz, Patricia Saxton, and Adrienne Wheeler use their art as a means of finding and creating havens for self-expression and personal development. Their subjects address fundamentally broader issues of morality, sexuality, family, self and social identity as well as spiritual fulfillment. Each of these women brings with them their own uniqueness and Edenic imagery to the story of Eve. They all tell a portion of the whole. Be it through the use of color, form, and textures as in Allen’s and FeBland’s work or in the visually rich and lushes depictions of Saxton’s fruits; or even in the exploration of the raw found materials and objects as used by Wheeler in the creation of her almost ceremonial type sculptures that seem to represent both the vulnerability of woman as well as her strength. Or as in Cuevas’ paintings and pastels; they often straddle abstract and figurative realms, with favorite subjects like bodies, fruits and foliages melting and blurring into sensual fields of color and texture. While Ortiz’s recurring themes in her surreal compositions focuses on the intertwining and connection of woman to nature; and Molina’s digital graphics of genealogy and botany also speaks to the fundamental issues; as well as Bank’s iconographic sculpture the speaks to and address the once traditional rolls of women. In this sense, these artists manages to be extremely personal – delving into intimate imagery and ideas – and unmistakably universal, exploring the boundaries between public and private identities and the image of Eve.

Dialogue with an Ancient Forest
HERB ROSENBERG
November 14-December 30, 2009

Perth Amboy Gallery Center for the Arts is pleased to present the exhibition,Dialogue with an Ancient Forest taking place from November 14 to December 30, 2009. Its first solo-exhibition – a large-scale multi-media installation by renowned New Jersey sculptor, Herb Rosenberg. The installation entitled “Dialogue with an Ancient Forest” features thirteen monumental aluminum columns skillfully burnished to achieve the appearance of three-dimensional surfaces, reflecting and refracting light.
For the first solo-exhibition at the new Perth Amboy Gallery Center for the Arts, the gallery director Olga Mercedes Bautista wanted to display a significant New Jersey sculptor capable of spectacular and epic work that intricately intermingled 3-D (volume), 4-D (the space-time continuum), and 5-D (sound). Consequently, Herb Rosenberg, a professor of art and Chair of the Department of Art at New Jersey City University, Jersey City, was selected.
Also significant in the selection are numerous ecological themes throughout the “Dialogue,” as Bautista noted, “Rosenberg’s work conveys ecological portent; since currently, leading scientist assert that ancient forests throughout the world provide silent histories revealing evidence of life’s survival-techniques; from which, if we are to endure as a species, we should learn to listen or perhaps, listen to learn. Imaginatively and symbolically, Rosenberg’s “Dialogue” permits viewers to visually eavesdrop on these natural, life-affirming, and healing chronicles of existence. If we keenly and sensitively listen to ancient forests, we might not end-up recklessly destroying ourselves and the planet Earth that we love.”
The installation consists of thirteen nine-foot aluminum columns set on wooden bases from which wireless speakers emanate astonishing and sublime sound-compositions created by the artist’s son: Andrew Rosenberg. Thus, the installation invites viewers to stroll through an ancient sound-filled forest, thereby enhancing and increasing their environmental awareness, and thereby, awakening a deeper concern for life.

Pura Cuba
The Pura Cuba art exhibition explores themes of inclusion and exclusion that have imbued Cuban culture with a sense of being dispersed, disseminated, and assimilated: a state of existing “aqui y alla” (here and there) as perpetual outsiders. This sense of disconnection deeply affects Cubans on-and-off the island; thereby placing all Cubans in a variety of ever-widening cultural diasporas. Pura Cuba recognizes and acknowledges art’s role in reconciling Cuba’s 21st Century divergent socio-cultural aspirations. As a metaphor for artistic inspiration and creativity, Pura Cuba embraces universal manifestations of Cuban artistic expression, by examining the influence of Cuba and its history and culture on the imagination of artists from diverse backgrounds. Consequently, the curatorial intention of Pura Cuba is to present individual personal perspectives generating complex works-of-art (paintings, sculptures, photographs, digital works, and installations) that simultaneously convey or evoke nostalgic reveries, awareness of the present, as well as the urge for a brighter future.
Among the selected cohort of Pura Cuba artists, we find, Rob Barth, Olga Mercedes Bautista, Laura L. Cuevas, Todd Doney, Alice F. Mac Kenzie, Fermin Mendoza, Jesus Rivera, José M. Rodeiro, Edel Rodriguez, Larry Ross, and Raúl Villarreal. Innately and insightfully, within their imagery, these diverse artists visually capture or reveal the essence, attitude, flavor, milieu, and spirit of Cuba.
